ManyChat for Instagram is a tool that sends direct messages automatically when someone interacts with your account. The best-known case: a reel says "Comment LINK", someone types the word, and ManyChat sends them a private message with the link. This only works with a professional Instagram account (business or creator) and only through Meta's official API, with its limits: one private reply per comment, sent within seven days, further messages only once the person responds, and then within 24 hours. The free plan covers 25 active contacts a month, paid plans start at 17 dollars a month (as of November 2026). There are alternatives, including open source software you run yourself.
That is exactly how I use it: anyone who comments a specific keyword under one of my Instagram posts sometimes gets an automatic reply, for example with the link to my community. I use ManyChat for that. My reels are drafted by Conny, my AI employee for Instagram, with hook, script and caption.
What is ManyChat, and what does it do on Instagram?
ManyChat describes itself as a platform that replies to comments and messages automatically and calls itself an "official Meta-approved partner". Besides Instagram, its pricing page lists WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, email and SMS. On Instagram, a flow starts with a comment under a post or reel, with a direct message such as a reply to your story, or with a comment during a live video. You build the flow in a visual editor, without code. What is possible at all is decided by Meta's API for private replies, not by ManyChat.
How the comment-to-DM flow works
"Comment LINK" runs in four steps. Someone comments. Meta tells ManyChat the comment ID, username and text. ManyChat checks the keyword. On a match, a private reply goes out to exactly that comment; according to Meta it lands in the person's inbox if they follow you, otherwise in their requests folder.
ManyChat's own help names two limits. First, the private reply does not open the 24-hour window and does not make the person a contact. That only happens once they reply or tap a regular button or quick reply. A button with the action "Open website" does not count: whoever only opens the link does not become a contact you can message afterwards. Second, only a person's first comment under a post triggers the flow. According to ManyChat this is a limitation on Instagram's side that applies to every tool using this API.
That leads to the usual setup. An example: the first message says "Thanks for your comment, here comes the link" and carries a button "Send me the link". Whoever taps it opens the window and receives the second message with the link. Only now is a follow-up message possible, as long as it arrives within 24 hours of the tap.
Setting up ManyChat for Instagram
- Switch your account. According to ManyChat, personal accounts cannot be connected. What switching to creator or business involves is covered in Instagram Content Tools: What You Need.
- Connect. Under "Settings", choose the Instagram channel and click "Connect". ManyChat recommends "Via Meta", which requires a Meta business portfolio and unlocks the latest features. "Via Instagram" is faster but limits some features.
- Create the automation. New automation, trigger "User comments on your Post or Reel", then choose: a specific post, all posts, or the next one you publish.
- Set the keyword. Include certain words, exclude certain words, or take any comment. Optionally add public replies in several variations, which ManyChat rotates.
- Build the private reply. An Instagram message with "Send as a Private Reply". It may contain only one content block, text or an image with buttons.
- Test and go live. Use "Preview" to view it in Instagram, then "Set Live". Test by commenting from a second account; according to OpenReply's documentation, Meta rejects a DM to yourself.
To stay clear of spam filters, ManyChat recommends rewording your auto-replies regularly and avoiding very short or emoji-only replies.
Meta's rules: 7 days, one reply, 24 hours
What ManyChat can do is set by Meta. The key points from the developer documentation for the Instagram platform (as of November 2026):
On the last point, Meta writes that automated chats must disclose, where applicable law requires it, at the start of a conversation that an automated service is replying, and singles out California and Germany. Meta's examples are short sentences like "You're talking to a bot".
What ManyChat costs
Prices are listed on manychat.com/pricing, in dollars and excluding tax; according to ManyChat they depend on your billing country (as of November 2026):
An active contact is a person you exchange messages with during a billing month, no matter how many. Beyond your limit, automations keep running, and each additional contact costs between $0.10 (Essential) and $0.004 (Advanced) on monthly billing. The free plan has up to four live triggers, one user and ManyChat branding, with no credit card required. You can try Essential and Pro free for 14 days.
Privacy: what you need to sort out
This isn't legal advice, it's the operator's perspective. ManyChat is run by Manychat, Inc. in the USA. It processes the username, profile name and picture, the comment, the keyword and whether the link is clicked. My privacy policy (in German) covers this in its own section on automatic messages on Instagram, with the legal basis and the note that ManyChat is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. If you use ManyChat, you need a section like that too.
ManyChat alternatives, commercial and open source
With n8n you build the flow yourself and take on Meta's rules, token renewal and error cases. How to run n8n is covered in n8n Self-Hosted: Docker or Kubernetes, and when it is the right tool in n8n, Make, or Claude: What For?.
OpenReply: installed on my side, not in use yet
On GitHub, OpenReply calls itself "The open-source Manychat alternative". The software watches the comments on your posts and, when a keyword matches, sends a private reply through Meta's official API, optionally with a public reply as well. According to the project page it also responds to direct messages and story replies, counts link clicks and can hold back the link until someone follows you. It never asks for a password.
I have installed OpenReply on my Kubernetes cluster, but I have not used it yet. It has been running there since September 2026.
For running it yourself, the project page lists PostgreSQL, Redis, a public HTTPS URL, an always-on worker and an Instagram connection, either through your own Meta app or a paid connection provider. If the Meta app only serves your own accounts, Meta says standard access is enough; app review and business verification are only required for other people's accounts. If you switch from ManyChat, OpenReply says you have to disconnect it from the Instagram account first, otherwise button taps in the DMs fail.
Where Conny comes in
The automation is only half the job. The keyword has to appear in the reel and the caption, and nobody comments without a reason. In my business, Conny drafts hooks, scripts and captions in my voice. Posting is an approval step for me: Conny drafts, I approve. The same rule makes sense for a DM flow that writes in your name. What the call to action at the end of a caption looks like and where Meta draws the line on "engagement bait" is covered in How to Write Instagram Captions. Tag the link in the DM with campaign parameters so your analytics can attribute visits to the flow; how is explained in UTM Parameters: Examples and Common Mistakes.
Frequently asked questions
Is ManyChat free?
There is a free plan with 25 active contacts a month, up to four live triggers and ManyChat branding (as of November 2026).
Do I need a business account for ManyChat?
You need a professional account, so business or creator. According to ManyChat, a personal account cannot be connected.
Can ManyChat message people who never interacted with me?
No. According to Meta, a conversation only starts when the person messages you, comments or replies to a story. Cold outreach via Instagram DM is not possible through this API.
Why does someone not get a DM even though they commented the keyword?
Common reasons: they already commented under that post once, the comment is older than seven days, or the automation applies to a different post. Comments from your own account do not trigger a DM.
What to do next
Take a reel that already points to something: a template, a guide, a page. Pick a keyword, build the first message with a button instead of the direct link, add a short bot notice and test with a second account. Update your privacy policy. After two weeks, check how many comments turned into clicks; only then is it worth asking about a higher plan or a self-hosted alternative.
Conny is available in my AI Employee Framework community as a ready-made template in Premium, with the production workflow for hooks, scripts, briefs, approval and review. Everything about it is on the community page.
