For new customers Grok costs between $0 and $200 a month: since xAI bundled Grok, Cursor and X into The X Subscription, the tiers are Free ($0), Plus ($8), Premium ($30), Super ($100) and Ultra ($200), each plus tax; paying annually lowers the monthly price, for Premium to $25. Grok Bot, xAI's agent on its own cloud computer, is only included from Premium. Existing SuperGrok, Cursor and X Premium subscriptions continue on their terms; according to xAI, new self-serve customers choose from The X Subscription. If you use Grok through the API, you pay by usage: the current model grok-4.7 costs $2 per million input and $6 per million output tokens, an image with Grok Imagine 2.0 costs 4 cents, and web search as a tool costs $5 per 1,000 calls. All prices come from xAI's documentation as of October 26, 2026.
My working tool is Claude, and I did not test Grok for this overview. I wrote it because the question "How much does Grok cost?" now often sits next to the question about Claude, and because the plans have just changed fundamentally. How Grok and Claude differ overall is in Grok vs Claude 2026: Compared for Work. Everything I collect about AI in daily work is on the AI hub.
Grok subscription prices: The X Subscription
All prices are list prices without sales tax; where required, tax is added at checkout. According to xAI, the multipliers in the fourth column refer to the included usage of Plus; the docs give no figure in requests or tokens.
Three things to know about these tiers. First, Grok and Cursor share one weekly usage pool: chat, images, video, Grok Bot and coding all draw from the same pool, and expensive actions such as a long video or a long coding task use more than a chat message. Second, the paid individual tiers include X benefits once you connect a personal X account: Plus a checkmark, creator tools and fewer ads, Premium and up the full X Premium+ benefits. Third, third-party models in Cursor, such as Claude or GPT, are not part of the pool. According to xAI you pay for them at API list prices from your credit from the first use.
Teams buy seats from Premium: $30 per seat for Premium, $100 for Super, $200 for Ultra. Each seat has its own weekly pool; the credit for additional usage is shared by the team. Plus isn't available for teams.
Is Grok free?
Partly. The Free tier costs nothing and, according to xAI, includes "limited" usage; the docs give no exact figure. When the weekly pool of a paid plan runs out, paid features pause until the next reset. According to xAI, chat and voice remain available within the free-tier limits, which reset on their own schedule. After that you have three options: buy credits for additional usage, move to a higher tier, or turn on automatic top-ups. According to xAI, extra credits cost standard rates and are therefore more expensive per action than the usage included in a plan; they expire one year after purchase. You can set a monthly cap on additional usage; once it is reached, additional usage stops even if credit remains.
SuperGrok, Cursor and X Premium: what happens to old plans
If you already pay for SuperGrok, SuperGrok Heavy, a Cursor plan or X Premium, you don't have to do anything. According to xAI these subscriptions continue until you change or cancel them. New self-serve customers, however, choose from The X Subscription. xAI's docs don't list SuperGrok prices, and the pricing page x.ai/pricing could not be reached when I retrieved it, so they are not here.
Switching to The X Subscription is optional but permanent: the combined accounts can't be separated again, not even by support, and cancelling The X Subscription does not restore the old plans. When you switch, xAI cancels the old plans you select and refunds the unused time pro rata, separately from the new purchase price. The exception: a Cursor subscription billed through the Apple App Store has to be cancelled with Apple yourself.
To cancel Grok, a directly billed plan can be cancelled at any time on the grok.com dashboard under "Billing & invoices". If you subscribed through X, Google Play or Apple, cancel there.
Grok Bot pricing
For new customers Grok Bot is included in Premium, Super and Ultra and draws from the shared weekly pool; Plus and Free do not include it. According to Cursor, existing customers have other routes: Grok Bot is part of the legacy Cursor Pro, Pro+, Ultra and Cursor Teams plans, and you can link a SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, SuperGrok Heavy or X Premium+ subscription. SuperGrok Lite does not include Grok Bot. A Cursor plan and a link don't add up; Grok Bot uses whichever grants more weekly usage.
Grok API pricing
The API bills by token. Below 200k prompt tokens the standard price applies; once a prompt reaches that threshold, the higher price applies to all tokens in the request.
On top of that come surcharges and discounts that add up quickly:
- Batch API: 20% off grok-4.7, 4.6, 4.5, 4.3 and the 4.20 models, not on grok-build-0.1; images and video are billed at standard rates there. Results usually within 24 hours.
- Priority Processing: twice the price for faster scheduling.
- US endpoint: a 10% surcharge if processing must be guaranteed to happen in the US, but only for grok-4.7 and grok-4.6 and without images, video, voice, tools and files. The regions page names no EU endpoint; the Imagine page mentions "EU data residency options" without details.
- Grok 4.7 Fast: the same model on faster infrastructure at twice the token price, only in Cursor and Grok Build, not on the public API.
Tools cost extra on top of tokens: web search, code execution and search in attached files at $5 per 1,000 calls each, search in your own document collections at $2.50 per 1,000 calls. X search counts results rather than calls: $5 per 1,000 posts read and $10 per 1,000 profiles.
Grok Imagine for images and video bills per image or per second:
According to xAI, image edits are billed for both the input image and the result, and for video both duration and resolution affect the price. How Grok Imagine compares with other image tools is in AI Image Generation Compared.
Sample calculation: 1,000 requests a month
An example at list prices, without caching and below the 200k token threshold: a small tool sends 1,000 requests a month to the API, each with 3,000 input and 800 output tokens. That is 3 million input and 0.8 million output tokens.
If the model calls web search twice per request, 2,000 calls add $10.00, almost as much as the tokens themselves. That is the real lesson of the calculation: with agents that use tools, it is not just the token price that decides, but how often the model calls tools on its own. xAI itself writes that costs scale with the complexity of the query. The calculation is an example, not a measurement; how many tokens and calls your tasks need only shows in a trial run with real tasks and a spending cap switched on. How the Claude API bills is in Claude API Key: Setup, Pricing, First Call.
What I would look at when choosing
This is my assessment, not a measurement.
Free or Plus is enough for occasional use. If you want to try Grok Bot, you are at $30 a month at least. If you already have a paid Cursor plan, check first whether Grok Bot is already included before you switch, because the switch can't be undone. For the API, a spending cap pays off from day one because tool calls drive the price. And if you work with client data, settle where it is processed before you look at the price: the default endpoint guarantees no location, and according to xAI Grok Bot's computers run in the US. What that means for companies is in Grok and GDPR: A Checklist for Companies. For comparison, what Claude offers for free is in Claude Free Plan: What You Get.
