This isn't legal advice, just the operator's perspective I use to check AI tools for my own business in Germany, so the privacy part is about the GDPR and the EU. Le Chat, the AI chat from Mistral AI in Paris, has been called Vibe since 28 May 2026. According to Mistral, address, login, history and plans stayed the same: you still open chat.mistral.ai. There's a free plan, Pro at $14.99 a month, Team at $24.99 per user per month (excluding taxes; euro prices are the same figures) and Enterprise on request. Mistral says your data is hosted in the EU by default. The point many people miss: on Free, Pro and Team, Mistral uses your inputs and outputs to train its models by default until you opt out. Only Enterprise is opted out from the start.

Everything here comes from Mistral's own pages (product, pricing, docs, help center, legal texts), as of 4 November 2026, not from my own test and without an account of my own. I work with Claude myself: my own workforce runs on Claude with a DPA day to day, and for business data I chose Claude Team. More on AI in everyday work is collected on my AI page.

From Le Chat to Vibe: what changed

Mistral renamed Le Chat on 28 May 2026 and merged it with its coding tool. The help center says: "Le Chat is now Vibe, Mistral's unified agent for professional productivity and coding tasks." Vibe has two modes:

  • Work is the former chat in the browser and the iOS and Android apps. Since 22 September 2026, quick conversations and multi-step tasks live in one interface; a fast/think toggle sets how deep Vibe goes.
  • Code is the coding mode in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, and as remote sessions in the cloud.

The merge moved some familiar features. According to the docs, Agents are replaced by Skills (invoked with @), Memories move into the Knowledge Base, and Deep Research is now a Skill. Self-serve Free, Pro and Team accounts migrate first; Enterprise customers get a six-month window. Looking for "Le Chat agents"? They're Skills now.

What Le Chat (Vibe) can do, according to Mistral

The features in Work mode, as Mistral documents them:

  1. Web search and Open URL. Vibe searches the web and shows its sources as links. For news it draws on the agencies AFP and AP, according to the docs. Paste a link and Vibe reads the page.
  2. Files and Canvas. Upload PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images, emails (EML, MSG) and many text formats. Reports or slides are produced in Canvas, a built-in editor.
  3. Libraries. Persistent collections of your own documents and web pages that you can attach to any task; up to 100 files at once, up to 100 MB per file.
  4. Projects. Group chats by client or initiative, with their own instructions and files per project.
  5. Knowledge Base. Vibe remembers preferences and context from your chats, when you ask it to ("Remember that …") or on its own. According to the docs it's on by default. It only stores sensitive details such as health data once you explicitly turn that on.
  6. Connectors. Integrations with Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive, SharePoint, Slack, Notion, GitHub, Jira and more, plus custom MCP servers (beta). Before Vibe sends an email, creates an event or changes data, it asks for your approval.
  7. Images. Generate and edit images in the chat, using Black Forest Labs models according to the docs.
  8. Scheduled tasks. A prompt runs once or daily, weekly or monthly.

Mistral lists German among the languages its models handle with "strong expected performance", so you can write to Vibe in German. The help center is in English, French and Italian; the privacy policy is also in German, the DPA and commercial terms only in English.

Le Chat pricing: Free, Pro, Team, Enterprise

Plan Price according to Mistral What you get on top
Free $0 limited messages and web searches, basic image generation, connectors, limited coding sessions
Pro $14.99 a month, excluding taxes more messages and web searches, all-day coding, spreadsheets and slides, up to 15 GB for libraries, $25.50 a month in API credits (as of 4 November 2026), chat and email support
Team $24.99 per user per month, excluding taxes higher limits, up to 30 GB storage per user, domain verification, data export, shared workspace with admin controls
Enterprise on request custom models, agents and workflows, audit logs, SAML SSO, deployment in your private cloud or on premises

Verified students get Pro for $5.99 a month, for up to 12 months and only if they haven't used Vibe or Le Chat before. Mistral only states quotas as multiples ("up to 6x" more messages than Free) and subject to fair use. API usage is billed per token.

Mistral Le Chat and privacy: what "from the EU" means

Per its legal notice, Mistral AI is a French simplified joint stock company in Paris. That sets it apart from US providers, but it isn't a free pass. Four points from Mistral's own documents:

Where data is stored. "By default, your data is hosted in the European Union." Depending on the feature, data can be transferred temporarily to subprocessors outside the EU, covered by standard contractual clauses. Only Enterprise customers can switch off some of these features for the whole organisation.

Training. In Vibe, inputs and outputs are used for training by default, and uploaded documents count as input. On Team, an admin can turn this off for the whole organisation; on Enterprise it's off from the start. Thumbs up or down feedback, including the conversation, may be used on every plan. Data accessed through connectors is never used for training on any plan, according to the docs.

Data processing. If you use Vibe to process personal data as part of your business, the privacy policy says you're the controller and Mistral is your processor. The data processing addendum is part of the contract; according to the help center, Mistral doesn't sign it offline. Section 2.3 matters most: for training its models, Mistral acts as a controller itself, "unless Customer is or has opted-out of training". Without an opt-out, Mistral may therefore use client data from a business account for training too.

Retention. Conversations stay until you delete them or your account. Zero data retention isn't available for Vibe Work or Chat on any plan, only for certain API calls. A Temporary Chat stays out of your history and out of training. A chat shared via link is readable by anyone with the link.

So an EU headquarters alone isn't enough: GDPR compliance depends on the settings and the data you put in. Which data belongs in an AI chat at all is covered in AI and Privacy: What the AI Gets to See.

Checklist: Le Chat at work

  1. Pick the plan. For client data, Team or Enterprise, not individual employees' personal Free or Pro accounts.
  2. Turn off training. In the admin panel under Vibe, Privacy section, disable "Allow your interactions to be used to train our models". In the mobile app: Settings, "Data & Account Controls", untick "Enable data sharing". Mistral says the API opt-out and the Vibe opt-out are separate toggles. Per the commercial terms, neither applies to Labs or Preview models in AI Studio.
  3. Set a feedback rule. Thumbs up or down only on chats without client data.
  4. Decide on the Knowledge Base. Admins can turn it off for everyone. If you use it, leave sensitive data out.
  5. Limit connectors. Only enable what you need. Admins can disable individual connectors.
  6. File the contract. Save the current version of the data processing addendum (effective 27 July 2026) and add Mistral to your record of processing activities.

Le Chat vs Claude, briefly

Question Mistral Vibe (Le Chat) Claude
Controller for users in the EU Mistral AI, Paris per the privacy policy Anthropic Ireland, Limited, Dublin; Anthropic PBC is based in San Francisco
Processing location EU by default, with exceptions per feature for the API "global" or "us" per the docs; EU processing via AWS Bedrock
Training, individual plan on by default, can be turned off you choose in your settings
Training, business plan Team on by default, admin turns it off; Enterprise off Team, Enterprise and API off by default
Individual plan Pro $14.99 Pro $20 a month, $17 billed annually
Team $24.99 per user from $25 per user, $20 billed annually

Mistral scores with its EU headquarters, EU storage and a cheaper entry price; Claude with training off by default on business plans. Where processing in the EU is required, I use Claude via AWS Bedrock in some cases, as described in Claude on AWS Bedrock: EU, GDPR and Cost. What my workforce on Claude looks like is in Claude Over ChatGPT: My AI Employees. Where Mistral sits next to Aleph Alpha, IONOS, STACKIT and others is covered in European AI Providers Beyond ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Is Le Chat free?

Yes, the free plan includes web search, files, basic image generation and connectors, with limited messages and searches. More usage and all-day coding start with Pro.

Is Mistral Le Chat GDPR compliant?

There's no blanket answer, and this isn't legal advice. Mistral is based in Paris, stores data in the EU by default and offers business customers a data processing addendum. Whether your use is lawful depends on your plan, your data and above all on the training setting, which is on by default for Free, Pro and Team.

How do I turn off training in Le Chat?

Use the toggles from step 2 of the checklist, in the admin panel or the mobile app. On Team, an admin can do this for everyone. Thumbs up or down feedback is still used.

Is Le Chat an alternative to ChatGPT?

For the core jobs of an AI chat, Vibe covers the basics according to Mistral; there's no test against ChatGPT here. For a business, what matters more is the Paris headquarters, EU storage and the training setting you have to switch off yourself.
