You can get a ChatGPT course straight from the maker: the OpenAI Academy offers self-paced courses, and the entry course "AI Foundations" takes about 70 minutes according to OpenAI. It ends with an assessment that you pass with at least 80 percent and a digital badge. According to OpenAI, sign-up is free. Beyond that there are three kinds of courses: local adult education and chamber courses, video courses on online platforms, and training from providers for companies. Which one fits depends on whether you learn alone, need fixed dates or want to train a whole team. None of them replaces practising on your own tasks.
I have worked with Claude every day since February 2025, and my focus is Claude, because my own work runs on it. The fundamentals a ChatGPT course teaches apply to all common tools, though. The course details in this article come from the providers' websites as of November 1, 2026, not from a test of my own.
ChatGPT course from OpenAI: the OpenAI Academy
The OpenAI Academy is the learning offer of OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. For working with ChatGPT day to day, it has three courses that build on each other:
On top of that there are courses for developers (five on the OpenAI API, three on Codex, OpenAI's coding tool), one for leaders ("AI Leadership") and two for education, for teachers and for students. OpenAI also explains new features in so-called Release Packs; the first one covers the GPT-6 Astra model and ChatGPT Work and explicitly comes without an assessment or badge.
What the entry course requires
For "AI Foundations", OpenAI's course page states: about 70 minutes, self-paced, introductory level, no technical background required. Your progress is saved, so you do not have to finish in one go. You need two things: a ChatGPT account and a real work task to practise on. Whether a free ChatGPT account is enough is not stated on the course page.
What the OpenAI Academy costs
According to the OpenAI Academy, sign-up "is free and open to all". Neither the course overview nor the course page names a price for individual courses. OpenAI's help centre stated, as of October 27, 2026, that the courses are free and do not require a workspace membership. Whether individual developer courses require a paid plan is not clear from the overview; check the page of each course.
Assessment, badge and certificate
According to OpenAI, every course includes an assessment, and the badges are issued through the service Accredible. For "AI Foundations" you need at least 80 percent. Accredible then emails you a link to your digital badge, which you can share on LinkedIn, for example.
A badge like this shows that you completed a course, not that you passed a proctored exam. OpenAI itself stated, as of October 27, 2026, that its badges and certificates of completion are not certifications. Whether OpenAI also offers a proctored certification exam for individuals could not be confirmed on OpenAI's own pages on November 1, 2026. If a provider advertises an "official ChatGPT certificate", ask who issues it.
Other ChatGPT courses: three kinds
Many others besides OpenAI offer ChatGPT courses. I deliberately do not name providers here, because prices, dates and content change too often. The kinds of courses differ clearly, though:
Funding: when someone else pays
This part is about Germany. A short ChatGPT course is rarely funded there. The Federal Employment Agency supports training for employees only if, among other things, it covers more than 120 hours, both the course and the provider are approved, and it goes beyond short-term adaptation to the job. Training on company-specific software is explicitly excluded. An evening course on ChatGPT does not qualify; a longer approved course on AI can.
According to the Federal Employment Agency, an education voucher (Bildungsgutschein) can cover certain costs of vocational training, for unemployed people and for employees, for employees only in agreement with their employer. The programmes available to businesses are in AI Funding for Small Firms in Germany. This is not funding advice; whether a course is funded is for the funding body to decide.
What to look for in a ChatGPT course
Privacy comes before the first prompt
A good course shows you early on where you set in ChatGPT whether your chats are used to train the models, and which data does not belong in the chat at all. If that is missing, the most important part for business use is missing. My three questions on this are in AI and Privacy: What the AI Gets to See.
Practice on your own tasks
Before you book, ask how much time you spend working on your own tasks. OpenAI takes the same line: for "AI Foundations" you bring a real task from your work. A course that only demonstrates features fades as soon as you are back in front of your inbox.
How current it is
ChatGPT changes quickly. OpenAI itself says its courses are updated as its products and guidance evolve, and in October 2026 it published a separate pack on a new model. With other courses, check the date of the last update.
A certificate is not a requirement
You do not need a certificate for yourself. If staff in your business use AI at work, Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires measures for AI literacy, but according to Germany's Federal Network Agency no certification. What that means in practice is in AI Literacy Under the AI Act: Training Staff. This is not legal advice.
A four-week learning path for ChatGPT
As a rule of thumb, not a fixed plan:
- Week 1: Work through "AI Foundations", set up ChatGPT and check the privacy setting.
- Week 2: One real, low-risk task every day: draft an email, summarise a document, build an outline. Read the result critically.
- Week 3: "Applied AI Foundations", and write down a task that comes back every week as a fixed workflow with a review point.
- Week 4: Turn it into a fixed solution, for example a saved instruction or a template you use again and again.
What this path looks like without a specific tool is in How to Learn AI: A Path for Beginners.
ChatGPT course or Claude course?
The fundamentals carry over: clear instructions, adding context, reviewing results, no sensitive data in the wrong plan. But vendor courses teach their own tool, with its menus and features. So choose the tool first and the course second.
Anthropic, the maker of Claude, has its own free course offer with completion badges, the Claude Academy. What it includes is in Claude Courses: What Exists, What's Worth It. If you want to code with Claude, the courses for that are in Claude Code Course: Options and Learning Path.
With support: what I offer
If you do not want to learn alone, there are three ways to work with me. They are an option next to the courses above, not a replacement for the fundamentals:
- Mini-course by email, free: five evenings, five emails, each with one project to beat the paperwork and a brief to copy. You can sign up on the templates page; with the sign-up you also get my newsletter.
- Community AI Employee Framework: my English community on Skool. It works with Claude, ChatGPT or open-source models, and the lessons show both the Claude and the ChatGPT way. Standard is $5 a month as a founding offer for the first 50 members, Premium is $149 a month, cancel anytime (as of October 29, 2026, prices in US dollars as listed on Skool). There is no certificate.
- AI Training and Workshops for Teams: for office teams who want to use Claude or ChatGPT safely and sensibly in daily work, on site at your company or remotely, price on request. The fundamentals apply to all common tools; which ones you use, we clarify in the initial call.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free ChatGPT course?
Yes. The OpenAI Academy offers self-paced courses, including the entry course "AI Foundations" at about 70 minutes. According to OpenAI, sign-up is free; the course page names no price. You need a ChatGPT account.
Is there an official ChatGPT certificate?
After you pass a course assessment, OpenAI issues a digital badge through Accredible. According to OpenAI, that is not a certification (as of October 27, 2026). A proctored OpenAI certification exam for individuals could not be confirmed on OpenAI's own pages on November 1, 2026.
ChatGPT course in person or online?
An in-person course fits if you need fixed dates and a person to ask. Online, you learn at your own pace but have to keep going yourself. Either way, what counts is practising on your own tasks.
How long does a ChatGPT course take?
The OpenAI Academy entry course takes about 70 minutes according to OpenAI. You only become confident in daily work through practice. As a rule of thumb: two to three weeks with one real task a day.
Is the OpenAI Academy available in other languages?
The course overview and course pages were in English on November 1, 2026; they do not state other language versions of the course content.
Is a ChatGPT course funded?
In Germany, rarely. The Federal Employment Agency supports employee training only above 120 hours with an approved course and provider, and only in agreement with the employer. The education voucher is then available to employees as well as to unemployed people. This is not funding advice.
Where to go from here
Sign up at the OpenAI Academy, pick a real task from your week for "AI Foundations" and work through the course over two or three evenings. Then decide whether you need another course or simply practise every day. If you find you would rather work with Claude, Learn Claude: The Path in Five Stages shows you the way.
