Perplexity vs Claude comes down to what you need out of it. Perplexity is an answer engine: it searches the web live, backs every answer with sources and, on paid plans, lets you pick models from several providers. Claude is a work tool: Projects, Artifacts, Claude Code and Cowork, with web search included. The line is blurring, since Perplexity now has an agent called Computer. Prices are close: Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month billed annually, Max $200 a month; Claude Pro $20 ($17 billed annually), Max $100 and Claude Ultra, called Max 20x until October 30, 2026, $200. Both let you opt out of training on personal plans; business plans are excluded, per the vendors. My rule of thumb: for a sourced answer, Perplexity is the shorter path; for a finished file or a completed task, Claude. As of November 1, 2026.

I work with Claude every day; my fourteen AI employees run on Claude Team, some also on open models or through the API. This comparison is based on both vendors' pages, retrieved on November 1, 2026, not on a side-by-side test of my own. So you can run that test yourself, three tasks with criteria follow further down.

How their in-depth research features compare on paper with ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot is in Deep Research: Which AI Researches Best. Everything else about Claude is collected on my Claude page.

The last row is my assessment, the rest is vendor information.

What Perplexity is: an answer engine with sources

Perplexity calls itself an AI-powered search engine: it searches the web in real time and answers with links to the original sources. With "Best", it picks the model per question; from Pro you can choose it. According to the Help Center as of October 27, 2026, Pro includes GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Grok 4.7 and more; Max adds Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1. Pro adds premium data such as Statista and PitchBook.

So Claude is available inside Perplexity, but Perplexity itself says a model there can behave differently than in the provider's app, because it runs with Perplexity's own search, prompts and limits.

Projects bundle searches, files, instructions and connected tools. Comet is Perplexity's Chromium-based browser; its assistant for tasks in the browser comes with a monthly allowance from Pro. Computer is an agent in an isolated cloud environment that builds documents and apps and runs tasks on a schedule, billed through credits. Perplexity's own summary: "Perplexity answers your questions. Computer does your work."

What Claude is: a work tool

Five building blocks make Claude a work tool:

  • Projects: workspaces with documents and instructions, up to five on the Free plan. More in How to Use Claude Projects Right.
  • Artifacts: documents, decks, dashboards or small tools, editable and shareable next to the chat, on every plan. More in Claude Artifacts: Create and Share.
  • Claude Code: reads and edits your files and runs commands, from Pro. To get started: Claude Code: A Guide for Beginners.
  • Cowork: you describe a task, Claude works through it in the cloud and reaches your files through the desktop app, from Pro. More in Claude Cowork: What It Does, Who It's For.
  • Web search and Research: web search with sources on every plan; Research from Pro, with several searches that build on each other, including connected tools such as Gmail.

Instead of a browser, there is the Claude in Chrome extension. My AI employees are folders with rules, a personnel file and skills that run through Claude Code, described in My AI Workforce: Fourteen Employees, One Boss.

Perplexity or Claude: pricing

Perplexity: Free includes three Pro searches a day. Pro costs $17 a month billed annually; the pricing page shows no monthly-billed price (November 1, 2026). According to the Help Center, Max costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year.

Claude: Pro costs $20 a month, $17 billed annually, and Max $100 with five times Pro usage. Claude Ultra costs $200, brings ten times Pro usage per week and, for verified accounts, no five-hour limit; existing Max 20x plans moved over on October 30, 2026 at the same price, and Ultra is currently billed monthly only. Whether Pro is enough or Max pays off is in Claude Pro or Max: Limits Explained. All Claude prices exclude tax. All plans in detail are in Claude Pricing and Plans Explained, free plan details in Claude Free Plan: What You Get.

Privacy: who trains on your input

This isn't legal advice, just the operator's perspective I use to choose AI tools for my own business and real client data.

Perplexity: On Free, Pro and Max, "AI data retention" is on by default, so your data can go into training. You turn it off under Preferences, but only for future data: according to Perplexity, training data already collected cannot be removed. Enterprise data is never used for training, and Perplexity's agreements with model providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic prohibit them from training on it.

Claude: On personal plans a toggle decides whether your chats help improve Claude; if allowed, they stay in the training pipeline, de-identified, for up to five years. Incognito chats are never used. Team, Enterprise and the API are excluded by default. Toggles, retention and data processing terms are in Claude Privacy and GDPR: What Applies.

To decide which data belongs in an AI tool, use the questions in AI and Privacy: What the AI Gets to See.

Test it yourself: three tasks, the same wording

Vendor pages say what a tool is supposed to do, not how it handles your tasks. Only a test with clear rules shows that: three typical tasks, the same wording, the same day, a fresh chat outside any project, test data only. For tasks 1 and 2, decide beforehand what the right answer is. The tasks are written for a German business; adapt them to your country.

Task 1: research with mandatory sources

From when does a small business in Germany with 600,000 euros in
revenue in the previous year have to issue e-invoices to other
businesses, and what applies to paper and PDF invoices until then? Use
only official sources (Federal Ministry of Finance, Gesetze im
Internet). Back every statement with a link and give the date of the
source. If you cannot back something up, say so.

What to check: How many sources does the answer give, and how many are official? Do the deadline and revenue threshold match the statute you looked up yourself beforehand? Are there statements without a source? The test only assesses how well the tools back up their answers and is not tax advice.

Task 2: analysing a file

Attached is our 2025 revenue list as a CSV file (columns: date,
customer, net amount in euros). Name the five customers with the
highest revenue and their share of total revenue, show the months in
which revenue was more than 20 percent below the previous month, and
create a bar chart by month. For every figure, explain how you
calculated it. Deliver the result as an Excel file.

What to check: Use a test file with made-up customers and work it out in a spreadsheet first. Are the customers, shares and months right? Do you get an Excel file with a chart? Does the tool search the web although everything is in the file? Per the vendors, both can create files: Perplexity from Pro, Claude with code execution on every plan.

Task 3: writing to a brief

Write a reply to this customer email: "My order 4711 arrived two weeks
late, and nobody responded when I asked about it. Not acceptable." We
are an online shop for office supplies. Requirements: formal tone, no
more than 120 words, apologise without excuses, offer a 10-euro voucher
for the next order, do not promise delivery times and do not invent
reasons for the delay.

What to check: Tick off the six requirements one by one and count the words. How many minutes of rework until the email is ready to send?

The criteria at a glance

Criterion How you measure it
Sources sources in total, of which official, statements without a source
Accuracy errors against the answer you fixed beforehand
Result as a file Excel file with chart, yes or no
Requirements requirements met out of six, word count
Rework minutes until the result is usable
Time minutes from prompt to answer

Put the numbers for both tools in a table before you form an opinion. Otherwise your impression decides.

Claude or Perplexity: what to use for what

A decision aid by use case from vendor information, not a measurement.

  • Quick factual question with a source: Perplexity is built for this. Claude can do it with web search and keep working on the result in the same chat.
  • Market overview with Statista or PitchBook: Perplexity Pro includes them, per its pricing page.
  • Several models, one subscription: Perplexity, with the caveat above.
  • Your own documents over weeks: Claude Projects; Perplexity Projects head the same way.
  • Tasks in your own folders or with code: Claude Code and Cowork. Perplexity Computer works in a cloud environment by default.
  • Client data: on both, only on a business plan.

Paying for one? Ask what you do more often: look things up or hand things off. More comparisons: Claude vs ChatGPT 2026: Compared, Claude vs Gemini 2026: Compared, Grok vs Claude 2026: Compared for Work and Copilot vs Claude: What Works at the Office.

Where to go from here

Give three tasks from your own week to both tools with the same wording, and decide beforehand what a good result looks like. If you then want Claude to work for you, I show how my AI employees are built in my community AI Employee Framework.
