Free: for exploring, not for working
The free tier is enough to try Claude out: ask questions, draft texts, upload files, use web search. For a first impression, it's exactly right.
For real work, it's not enough. Usage is tightly limited, and anyone working with the AI daily hits the ceiling fast. What's realistically possible on free tiers and where they end is something I've written up separately: Building an AI agent: for free.
Pro at 20 dollars: the starting point for business
Pro is the plan where everything I describe on this website begins. You get significantly more usage than on the free tier, and two things are included at no extra charge that many people don't have on their radar: Claude Code and Claude Cowork, the two ways Claude works directly in your files and systems. Important to understand: Pro has usage limits too, and they reset in time windows. For building your first AI employee and the normal day-to-day of a solopreneur, Pro is almost always enough.
What does Claude Code cost?
Short answer: nothing extra. Claude Code has no price of its own, it's included in Pro and Max. The search term "Claude Code price" often causes confusion because there's also API billing alongside it: developers can use Claude Code via an API key and then pay per usage instead of a flat rate.
For you as a solopreneur, the subscription is almost always the better route: predictable fixed costs instead of an open-ended bill. You only need the API once you're building your own applications.
Max: when 20 dollars is no longer enough
Max comes in two tiers: 100 dollars for 5x and 200 dollars for 20x Pro usage, plus higher output limits and earlier access to new features.
When is it worth it? When you regularly hit the Pro limits because your AI employees work many hours a day. For perspective: a workforce of eight employees producing content, handling client projects, and doing office work burns through significantly more than a casual chat on the side. If you're just getting started, you don't need Max.
How the usage limits work
The plans differ less in features than in quantity. Claude meters usage in time windows: you have a quota that resets after a few hours. How far you get with it depends on the kind of work. A short chat uses little. Long documents, large Projects, and above all work sessions with Claude Code or Cowork use significantly more, because many steps run in the background.
So here's my practical advice: start with Pro and watch for two or three weeks whether you hit limits at all. You can upgrade to Max anytime, and downgrade too. There's no reason to buy the big plan as a precaution.
Team and Enterprise: for companies, not for getting started
The Team plan pays off as soon as several people in an organization are supposed to work with Claude: central billing, user management, SSO. Enterprise comes into play when compliance requirements like audit logs and fine-grained permissions are added; Anthropic only quotes the price on request.
As a solo business owner, you can ignore both. Otherwise you're paying for administrative features you don't need on your own.
Which plan do you actually need?
My assessment, without any sales logic:
- Just curious: Free. Test whether the way of working suits you.
- You want to start seriously: Pro at 20 dollars. That's enough to build your first AI employee completely, including Projects and Claude Code.
- Your AI works several hours a day: Max 5x at 100 dollars. Only upgrade once you repeatedly hit limits, not as a precaution.
- Several people in your company: Team.

The price isn't the real question
20 dollars a month is less than most self-employed people pay for their accounting tool. The real question isn't whether you can afford Claude, but whether you use it in a way that takes work off your plate instead of just answering questions.
