Claude vs Gemini 2026: Compared

Claude vs Gemini comes down less to the model and more to where you work: according to Google, Gemini is built into Google Workspace and Search and comes with its own image and video models; Claude, for me, is the tool that works inside my files and in the terminal, with Claude Code included from Pro up. On price, the entry plans sit close: Claude Pro at 20 dollars, Google AI Pro at 21.99 euros a month, as of September 2026, in different currencies, so that is an approximation. On privacy, both consumer apps use your chats for improvement by default, and both business offerings say they don't. On context windows, both now list up to 1 million tokens; for an agent in your own folders, Claude has the shorter path.

I've worked with Claude every day since Claude Code came out, and my AI workforce runs on it. Gemini, no: what I have and haven't used it for is the second section below. Everything else about Gemini here comes from official Google sources, retrieved in September 2026. The comparison with ChatGPT lives separately in Claude vs ChatGPT 2026: Compared. Everything else I write about Claude is collected on the Claude page.

Claude or Gemini: the short answer in one table

The Claude prices come from Claude Pricing and Plans Explained, the Gemini figures from Google's subscription page, developer docs and privacy hub, all as of September 2026. I name model versions only here, with dates.

How I've used Gemini and how I haven't

So you can judge what this comparison is worth: I have never used Gemini the way I use Claude. Now and then in the app or the browser when a question came up. No working day ran through it, no client project, no workforce. It was never my working tool, which is why this post has no head-to-head test of mine.

There is one exception: images. For image generation I used Google's image model Nano Banana for a long time, and regularly. Then a newer image model gave better results in my view, and I've worked with that one since. That is a personal judgement from my own use, not a test with criteria and scoring.

What this means for you: everything here about Gemini as a working tool is a vendor statement with a source. From experience I can speak to Claude and to image generation. Anyone promising a clean head-to-head test should first say how long they ran both tools in real work.

Models: two sets of numbers, two dates

The most common question is "Claude or Gemini: which model is better?", and the honest answer is that the vendor figures can't settle it. Both publish different benchmarks at different times, and neither measures the other's model.

For its frontier model from September 2026, Anthropic reports: Terminal-Bench 4.0 at 55.8 percent, OSWorld 2.0 (partial) at 77.9 percent, Humanity's Last Exam at 60.9 percent without tools, CursorBench at 73.4 percent. Google's model card for its Pro model from February 2026 reports: SWE-Bench Verified at 80.6 percent, GPQA Diamond at 94.3 percent, ARC-AGI-2 at 77.1 percent, Humanity's Last Exam at 51.4 percent with search and code. Only one test appears on both lists, and even that one was run differently. Seven months separate the releases. I don't declare a winner from that, and I'd advise you not to either.

What I can judge is working with Claude day to day. My line from a talk: it's not the model that decides, it's the harness, meaning the tools, rules, and files around the model. A model with access to your folders, clear rules, and your approval gets tasks done instead of just answering questions, and no benchmark measures that.

Claude vs Gemini price: dollars here, euros there (as of September 2026)

Anthropic lists its prices in dollars: Free 0, Pro 20 dollars a month, Max 100 or 200 dollars a month, Team from 20 dollars per seat a month, details in Claude Pricing and Plans Explained. Claude Code, Cowork and Claude in Chrome are included from Pro up according to Anthropic's pricing page, not on Free. Euro prices only appear after login, so I quote dollar list prices.

Google lists euro prices for Germany on its Gemini subscription page: Free at 0 euros with 15 GB of storage, AI Plus at 4.99 euros a month with double the limits and 400 GB, AI Pro at 21.99 euros with four times the limits, 5 TB and YouTube Premium Lite, AI Ultra from 99.99 euros (five times the limits) to 219.99 euros (twenty times). In dollars, Google lists Ultra at 100 and 200 dollars; a Google blog post from May 19, 2026, says the upper tier was cut from 250 dollars.

I don't convert the two currencies, because exchange rates and tax would shift the result. What follows compares orders of magnitude, not exact figures.

Three things stand out. First: the entry plans are level, 20 dollars against 21.99 euros, and so are the top tiers. Second: Google's plans bundle cloud storage and YouTube, a price advantage only if you'd pay for those anyway. Third: Google says Gemini has been included in Workspace Business and Enterprise since 2025; the pricing page lists Business Standard at 10.88 euros per user a month as a promotional price. For the standalone Gemini Enterprise app, Google points only to its sales team. A Claude Team seat starts at 25 dollars, details in Claude Team: Cost and When It Pays Off.

Claude vs Gemini for coding: Claude Code against Antigravity

On the Claude side it's straightforward: Claude Code, the terminal agent, is included from Pro up. It reads your files, edits them and runs commands; how to start is in Claude Code: A Guide for Beginners. I use it daily, not just for code but for proposals, notes and folder structures.

On Google's side, something shifted in 2026. According to Google's Gemini Code Assist FAQ, access to Gemini Code Assist and Gemini CLI ended on June 18, 2026, for individuals and for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers; Google points to Antigravity instead, while the Standard and Enterprise editions continue. Antigravity's pricing page lists an Individual plan at 0 dollars with Google's Flash and Pro models, plus, Google says, Claude models and an open OpenAI model.

My assessment, without a long-term test of Antigravity: once you pick Claude models inside it, the question is no longer "Claude or Gemini" but which harness you want around the model. For me that's Claude Code with CLAUDE.md, skills, and hooks, because my workforce is built on it. If you only occasionally have code written and want no subscription, Google's free Antigravity plan is an entry point Claude Code doesn't offer: Claude Code needs at least Pro.

Privacy: consumer app and business plan on both sides

This is not legal advice, just a summary of vendor statements as of September 2026. The full picture is in Claude Privacy and GDPR: What Applies.

Consumer: on Claude Free, Pro and Max, chats are used for training while the "Help improve our AI models" toggle is on; switching it off applies to new chats. For the Gemini app, Google writes in its Gemini Apps privacy notice that selected chats are read by human reviewers, and warns: "Please don't enter confidential information that you wouldn't want a reviewer to see". With activity on, Google keeps the data for 18 months by default, with it off for 72 hours; reviewed conversations are kept up to three years, even after deletion (as of August 10, 2026).

Business: for Claude Team and Enterprise, Anthropic states on its pricing page "No model training on your content by default". For Gemini in Workspace Business and Enterprise, Google says in its privacy hub that Workspace does not use customer data for training without the customer's prior permission. On certifications Google lists SOC 1, 2 and 3 plus ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and 42001; Anthropic lists SOC 2, ISO 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 42001:2023 and HIPAA with a BAA. Both are vendor claims.

In my case: I chose Claude Team for business data, because of the data processing agreement and privacy terms. Both tools send your input to the vendor's servers, mine included, because I work with a subscription login, not a model on my own hardware. If you need processing without a vendor in the loop, a local model is the only way: Qwen vs Claude: Local Versus Cloud.

What Claude does for me: Peter and 63 receipts

So you can see what "Claude or Gemini" is really about for me: delegation, not chat. Peter is my AI employee for bookkeeping, a folder on my computer with a CLAUDE.md, a personnel file, and learnings, run with Claude Code. On September 6, 2026, I dictated the task: evaluate 63 receipts. Peter reported "Executed 12 commands (2 failed)", checked net plus tax against gross on all 63, and asked two questions before producing output: one sentence had been cut off, and two currencies appeared, noting "I don't make up exchange rates". My answer: "Everything in euros, daily rate." Result: thirteen quarterly folders plus an Excel file.

In the same talk I said: "no matter whether you use Claude or ChatGPT or even an open source model", the pattern stays the same: a folder with a clear structure, rules, questions before output, approval by you. Whether Gemini works as well in such a setup, I can't say, because I haven't tested it. Why I ended up with Claude is in Claude Over ChatGPT: My AI Employees.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude or Gemini better for coding?

The vendor numbers can't answer that, because Anthropic (September 2026) and Google (February 2026) publish different tests at different times. What is verified is the access path: Claude Code from Pro up, and Antigravity with a free Individual plan, since Code Assist and CLI for individuals ended on June 18, 2026. I haven't run Antigravity long term.

What does Gemini Pro cost in Germany?

Google AI Pro costs 21.99 euros a month according to Google's subscription page, as of September 2026, with four times the Free limits, 5 TB of storage, and YouTube Premium Lite. Below it: AI Plus at 4.99 euros; above it: AI Ultra up to 219.99 euros.

Does Google use my Gemini chats for training?

According to Google's privacy notice for the Gemini apps, selected chats are read by human reviewers and used for improvement; Google itself warns against entering confidential information. Default retention is 18 months with activity on, 72 hours with it off. For Workspace Business and Enterprise, Google says: no training without prior permission. Not legal advice, as of September 2026.

Claude vs Gemini vs ChatGPT: do I need all three?

In my experience, no. I pay for Claude and ChatGPT but work almost exclusively with Claude, because my workforce runs in Claude Code. The two-way comparison is in Claude vs ChatGPT 2026: Compared. If you work in Google Workspace, Google says Gemini is already included.

Is Gemini worth it if I already pay for Google Workspace?

According to Google, Gemini has been included in Workspace Business and Enterprise since 2025, so you need no separate Google AI subscription. Whether that's enough depends on what you delegate: Google builds it into Docs and Gmail. For tasks in my own folders, with rules and approvals, I use Claude Code.

Which context window is bigger, Claude or Gemini?

Per the vendors they are level: Google lists 1 million tokens for its Pro model, and Anthropic's pricing page lists "up to 1M varies by model" on every plan, as of September 2026. So with Claude the context window is not a difference between plans. In my work that number is rarely the bottleneck anyway, because Claude Code reads files selectively.

Where to go from here

If you already have Gemini through Workspace, test it there with a real task before buying another subscription. If you want to hand tasks to an agent inside your own folders, start with Claude Pro and Claude Code: A Guide for Beginners. Plan prices are in Claude Pricing and Plans Explained. All prices here are as of September 2026; check them before you decide.
