There is no single best AI. For most office tasks, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini deliver usable results today; the differences lie in their strengths: ChatGPT has the broadest feature set with images, voice and a task mode, Claude is, in my experience, strong at writing and at working with long documents, and Gemini suits you best if you already work with Google services. Decide by your most important task and the programs you already use, and test for two weeks.
One thing first, so you can weigh my recommendation: I have worked with Claude every day since February 2025. My fourteen AI employees run on Claude Team, some also on open models or through the API. So I am not neutral. That is why I base the comparison on the providers' own information, which was checked on their pricing and help pages for this article, with sources current to 27 October 2026, and tell you where I speak from my own experience. I collect more basics about AI at work on my AI Basics page.
Which AIs are there?
When beginners ask for the best AI, they almost always mean an AI chat: a program you write to in plain sentences and that answers you. The three best known come from three companies:
- ChatGPT from OpenAI
- Claude from Anthropic
- Gemini from Google
There is also Microsoft Copilot, closely tied to Word, Excel and Outlook, Grok from xAI, and open models you can run on your own hardware. Behind every chat is a language model that is regularly replaced by newer versions. That is why rankings based on a single model often go out of date within a few months. I would rather compare what the tools can do in daily work.
The three compared by task
A token is a word piece the AI computes with. Why that matters is in Context and Context Windows in AI Explained.
When which AI fits
ChatGPT: if you want one tool for everything
According to its pricing page, ChatGPT covers the most features: images, voice chats, deep research, a mode for tasks with a finished result and Codex for programming tasks, each available in a limited way even on the free plan. Text chats on Free are unlimited according to OpenAI, subject to abuse guardrails. Mind privacy: on the personal plans Free, Plus and Pro, sharing your chats for training is switched on by default, according to OpenAI.
Claude: if you write a lot and work with documents
Here I speak from my own experience: I use Claude because it fits the way I work best for my writing and for working with long documents, and because I build my AI employees with Claude Code. According to Anthropic, the free plan gets you chat, web search, file creation, memory across conversations, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Claude does not generate images. On Claude Free, Pro and Max, your chats are used for training while the "Help improve our AI models" switch is on, and when a conversation is flagged for safety review. Anthropic lists this as opt-out in its pricing table, so you switch it off yourself. With Claude, Claude Guide: Getting Started walks you through the first steps.
Gemini: if your day runs on Google
If you use Gmail, Google Drive and Google Docs, Gemini is the shortest route. According to Google, Gemini is built into Gmail, Docs and other Google apps on the paid plans. The free access includes Canvas, Deep Research, slide generation and image generation, among other things, according to Google, but the context window of 32,000 tokens is rather small. Important for privacy: while "Keep Activity" is on, part of the chats can be reviewed by humans, according to Google. How Gemini and Claude differ in detail is in Claude vs Gemini 2026: Compared.
And Copilot, Grok and open models?
How to find the best AI for you
- Name your most important task. What should the AI mainly do? Write emails, summarise quotes, create images for social media, build presentations?
- Look at your programs. Do you work in Google or in Microsoft 365? Then try the tool built in there first.
- Test two tools side by side. Give two free plans the same real, harmless tasks for a week and compare the results.
- Check privacy. On day one, set the switch against training on both. Client data only belongs in a business plan with a contract.
- Decide and stick with it. A tool you know well brings more than constant switching.
An example from everyday office work
A made-up but typical example: a small architecture firm with four people works with Google Workspace on a plan that includes Gemini and writes many long building specifications. The owner tests Gemini and Claude for a week with the same three tasks: shorten a specification, draft an email to a client, summarise meeting minutes. Both deliver usable drafts. Gemini wins because it works directly in Google Docs, where the team writes anyway. The best AI here was the one that fits the daily routine.
What to watch out for
Frequently asked questions
Which AI is the best?
None is best at everything. ChatGPT has the broadest feature set, Claude is, in my experience, strong at writing and long documents, and Gemini suits Google users best. Decide by your most important task and test for two weeks.
Which is the best free AI?
For pure text chats, ChatGPT Free is the most generous: according to OpenAI, everyday text chats are unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails. I compare all free plans in detail in Free AI: What the Free Plans Can Do.
Is ChatGPT better than Gemini?
It depends on the task. ChatGPT offers more features in one tool, Gemini is more deeply integrated into Google services and has a slightly larger context window on the free plan. For most office tasks, both deliver usable results.
Which AI is good for everyday use?
For emails, summaries and rewording, any of the three is enough. More important than the choice is that you use it regularly for real tasks and check the results.
Which AI is safest for my data?
On personal plans you can switch training off with all three: in ChatGPT under "Improve the model for everyone", in Claude under "Help improve our AI models", in Gemini via "Keep Activity". OpenAI states that it is on by default, Anthropic lists it as opt-out in its pricing table. Check the switch on day one with any provider. For client data you need a business plan with a data processing agreement, whichever provider you choose. This is not legal advice.
Where to go from here
