How to rank in AI Overviews? Google's own answer is shorter than most guides: there is nothing extra to do. AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google shows above the regular results, with links to the pages the answer draws on. To be eligible as one of those links, a page has to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet in Google Search, and since August 31, 2026 your site must not be excluded from Google's generative AI features in Search Console. The rest is ordinary SEO, with no guarantee from Google or anyone else.
I follow the AI features of Google Search because I measure how often my own website appears there. That work belongs to Sebastian, my AI employee for SEO, GEO and blogging. Everything here comes from Google's documentation for site owners and the Google Search help centre, sources as of November 6, 2026; where the industry claims more, it is marked as a hypothesis. I collect all posts on search and AI search on my AI SEO for Google and AI Search page.
What AI Overviews are, from a site owner's view
Google describes AI Overviews as an AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper. Google shows them only when its systems decide they add something to classic Search, and says they therefore often don't trigger.
Under the hood they are tied to regular Search. Grounding, also called retrieval-augmented generation, uses the core ranking systems to fetch pages from the Search index and bases the answer on them. Query fan-out has the model generate related searches to pull in more results, so your page can show up for a sub-question nobody typed.
AI Overviews sit inside the normal results; AI Mode is a separate area for follow-up questions, covered in Google AI Mode: What It Is and How It Works.
Where AI Overviews appear
Google began rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the US on May 14, 2024. Today the help centre lists more than 200 countries and territories, including the US, the UK, every EU country and Switzerland, and 98 languages (as of November 2026). According to Google they are available to all users there, including image searches. Users cannot turn them off; Google calls them a core feature, like knowledge panels, and points to the Web filter for link-only results.
How to rank in AI Overviews: what Google actually says
Google's guide "AI features and your website" (last updated December 10, 2025) puts it in one line: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The guide "Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search" (last updated July 10, 2026) adds detail. Together they give three conditions:
- The page is indexed.
- The page may show a snippet. In Google's words: "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet".
- Your site isn't excluded in Search Console. The newer guide says a site "must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console". Included is the default.
And even when all of this is met, Google does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving.
Beyond that, Google lists the familiar SEO fundamentals:
- allow crawling in robots.txt, and in your CDN or hosting setup
- make content findable through internal links
- offer a good page experience
- put important content in text form
- support it with good images and video where it helps
- keep structured data in line with the visible text
- keep Merchant Center and Business Profile details current
The biggest lever, according to Google, is the content: "non-commodity content" with a perspective of your own, such as a first-hand review instead of a summary of what is everywhere. Building a page for every query variation or fan-out question mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses, on the other hand, violates Google's scaled content abuse policy. AI Overviews SEO tactics Google says you can skip
For Google Search, the guide names five things to ignore: llms.txt and other "special" AI files, chunking content into small pieces, rewriting content just for AI, chasing inauthentic mentions, and special schema markup. Structured data is still worth using, because it helps with rich results in regular Search. Many of these tactics are sold as AEO or GEO. Google's position: from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. How ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot differ is covered in What Is Generative Engine Optimization?.
Google is also blunt about tools: no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. What llms.txt can and can't do elsewhere is in llms.txt: Hype vs. Evidence. How to test your structured data properly is in Schema Markup Checker: Which Tool Tests What.
What Search Console shows
The generative AI report has the usual limits, such as 1,000 rows. If it stays empty, Google says the site usually hasn't had enough impressions, or it has been excluded.
On my own site, the report shows this: in the three months to November 1, 2026, just over 18 percent of kevinwelter.com's impressions in Google web search came from the AI features. The numbers are in Google AI Mode: What It Is and How It Works. How many became visits, the report can't say. To set up Search Console, see Setting Up Google Search Console. Measuring Google, Bing and ChatGPT side by side is covered in AI Visibility Tracking: How I Measure It.
Opting out: the controls and what they cost
If you don't want your content in AI answers, there are several routes, each with its own price:
On the Search Console control, Google says exclusion usually takes one to two days, sometimes longer. Content from other sites that resembles yours can still appear. The control does not affect model training; for that, Google points to Google-Extended. Subfolder and subdomain properties inherit the setting of their closest parent unless overridden.
Snippet rules only work after the next crawl, which Google says can take days to months. URL Inspection shows whether Googlebot sees your tag. When a recrawl request helps is covered in Google Indexing Request: When It Helps.
An example: say a small publisher sees its guides summarised in AI Overviews. Excluding the site also removes every impression as a cited source; nosnippet costs the snippet in regular results too. Only a before-and-after comparison in its own Search Console shows what pays off.
Evidence versus industry hypothesis
The Pew figures don't simply transfer to every site or market. On my site, Sebastian takes every figure from a saved tool result and flags trend topics without evidence as such instead of selling them. No one can promise you a spot in AI Overviews, and I won't either.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my site into AI Overviews?
Per Google, without special work: the page has to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet, and the site must not be excluded in Search Console. Then the regular ranking systems decide, with no guarantee.
Is there such a thing as AI Overviews SEO?
Not as a separate discipline, according to Google. Its guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO.
Can I opt my site out of AI Overviews?
Yes. Since August 31, 2026, every site can use the "Search generative AI" setting in Search Console. You then get no impressions or traffic from AI Overviews, AI Mode or Discover's AI features. For single pages, nosnippet works, but it also removes the snippet in regular results.
Where to go from here
Open Search Console today and check two things: under Settings, whether "Search generative AI" is set to include, and in the generative AI performance report, which of your pages already get impressions. Then run your three most important pages through URL Inspection to make sure no noindex or nosnippet is in the way. Next, look at the links between your pages: Internal Linking: Finding the Links You Miss. How to write content with a perspective of its own is in SEO Content Writing with AI.
