Claude Code vs Cowork isn't a question of better or worse: both get tasks done inside your own files and build on the same pieces, CLAUDE.md and skills. The difference is the interface. Claude Code runs in the terminal, plus in VS Code, JetBrains, the desktop app, and on the web at claude.ai/code. Cowork is an app with no terminal, available for macOS, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, plus web and mobile in beta (source: code.claude.com/docs/en/overview and claude.com/product/cowork, as of September 2026).

Terminal or app: what actually makes the difference
According to Anthropic, Claude Code is a tool that reads your codebase, edits files, and runs commands, controlled from the command line. You open your terminal, change into a project folder, and start the session with the command claude (source: code.claude.com/docs/en/overview, as of September 2026). Everything happens in that window: the task, the follow up questions, the approvals.
Cowork removes exactly that step. Instead of a command line, there's an ordinary app interface: you connect folders and tools, describe the task in plain language, and Cowork shows the work steps inside the app, not in a terminal. If you've never opened a terminal in your life, you won't notice how much happens behind the scenes until the finished work is in front of you.
Files and folders: how each one gets access
File access differs more in practice than the interface does. Claude Code works in the project folder you launch it in, including every subfolder, and reads the CLAUDE.md files at each level, from the user directory down to the project. According to Anthropic's documentation, Cowork also reads CLAUDE.md files in its sessions, but skips imports that point outside the working folder (source: code.claude.com/docs/en/memory, as of September 2026).
For you, that means a CLAUDE.md that only references files in the same folder works identically in both tools. A CLAUDE.md that imports shared knowledge from outside that folder, the way I use it for my personnel files, only unfolds its full effect in Claude Code.
Automatability: building roles versus steering tasks
In Claude Code, you build your own structure: subagents as Markdown files with frontmatter under .claude/agents/, each with its own context window and role, skills as SKILL.md files under .claude/skills/<name>/, invoked automatically or via /name, plus MCP servers you connect with claude mcp add (source: code.claude.com/docs/en/sub-agents, code.claude.com/docs/en/skills, code.claude.com/docs/en/mcp, as of September 2026). That lets you build an entire workforce out of clearly separated roles, each with its own files and its own memory.
Cowork, according to Anthropic, relies on plugins that bundle tools, knowledge, and workflows, plus skills and connectors (source: claude.com/product/cowork, as of September 2026). That automates individual tasks you steer from the app, but in my experience it doesn't go as deep as a structure of subagents you build yourself in Claude Code. If you want to build your own roles with their own context, you end up at Claude Code technically. If you want to hand a task to an existing, bundled tool, Cowork gets you further.
Who on my team uses what: Sonja and Ralf
The difference is clearest across two roles in my own workforce. Sonja is my assistant, she writes emails in my voice, sorts requests, and prepares documents. Her work lives in files and inboxes, not in code, so she runs in Cowork: I give her a folder and a task, she hands back a draft, and I decide myself what actually goes out.
Ralf, on the other hand, builds modern demo sites out of old websites, with git repositories, deploy configuration, and many interconnected files. That depth needs Claude Code: a terminal, a real folder structure, dedicated subagents for subtasks. So the choice between the two isn't one fundamental decision for the whole workforce, it's a question per role: does the work live in documents and folders, or in code and systems.
When Cowork is enough, when you need Claude Code
Cowork is enough when your recurring work consists of documents, spreadsheets, filing, and research, and you don't need deep technical control. You need Claude Code as soon as code, servers, or a folder structure with many dependencies enters the picture, or when you want to build your own subagents and skills as fixed roles.

How does Claude Cowork work compared to Claude Code?

What's the difference between Claude Code and Claude Desktop?
According to Anthropic's documentation, Claude's desktop app includes Claude Code, so you don't strictly need a separate terminal program. Cowork also comes as a desktop app for macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. So "Claude Desktop" isn't a third, standalone tool, it's the name for the desktop route into Claude.
Do I need both Cowork and Claude Code?
Not necessarily. If all your work lives in documents and filing, Cowork alone is enough. Once code or complex folder structures enter the picture, Claude Code is worth adding, the way I use different roles for different tasks.
Does my CLAUDE.md work in both tools?
At its core, yes, both read CLAUDE.md files. According to Anthropic's documentation, Cowork skips imports outside the working folder, while Claude Code reads the full level hierarchy. A simple CLAUDE.md without external imports works identically in both.
Who should start with Cowork, who should start with Claude Code?
If you've never worked with an AI directly in your own files before, Cowork is the easier start, with no terminal hurdle. If your work lives deep in code, servers, or many branching folders from day one, you can skip the detour and start straight with Claude Code.
