Web Design Pricing: What Designers Charge

How much does a web designer charge? That depends first on who builds the site: an agency, a freelancer, a website builder, or you with AI. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for web developers at $44.54 an hour and for web and digital interface designers at $50.00 an hour, or $104,000 a year (2025). That is what employed designers and developers earn, not what a freelancer bills you. For freelance rates, one survey with a disclosed method comes from Germany: in the Freelancer-Kompass 2026, freelancers in design, media and creative services report an average of 89 euros an hour. Agencies often quote project fees, with no public survey to cite. Billing follows one of three models: flat fee, hourly rate or monthly plan. And you don't pay for "the design" but for strategy, design, copy, build, testing and upkeep, only some of which AI has made cheaper.

My own stance is simple: the era of expensive websites is over. My websites are built by an AI employee, not by an agency; where that stance stops being true is further down. The full cost picture with domain, hosting and running costs is in What Does a Website or Landing Page Cost?. This article is about the price of the web design itself and how to compare quotes.

Web design pricing: four ways to get a website

Route Who builds Price according to the source What you get
Agency a team with project management, design and development usually a project fee; no citable survey with a disclosed method strategy, design and build from one place, copy and photos often extra
Freelancer one person, sometimes with partners no U.S. survey cited here; the German Freelancer-Kompass 2026 reports an average of 89 euros an hour for design, media and creative services a direct line to the person doing the work, usually a smaller scope
Website builder you, with templates and an editor monthly subscription, listed on each builder's pricing page editor, hosting and templates; design and copy are yours
Building with AI you with an AI tool or an AI employee the tool's subscription plus domain and hosting; Ralf via my community from $5 a month (team page as of October 29, 2026) your own source code that you can host anywhere; content and approval stay with you

Read both figures with care. A freelance rate has to cover unbilled time such as sales and admin, plus software and insurance, so a wage and a rate are not the same number. The German average spans a whole field on a platform whose users mostly work in IT: 1,310 freelancers took part in the income survey (January 19 to February 8, 2026), and only 5 percent of respondents named design, media and creative services as their field. Good for orientation, not for a budget.

Most agency price ranges you find in search are published by companies that sell web design. That doesn't make them wrong, but it doesn't make them neutral. So instead of a range, here is what a quote should break down.

What a web design price is made of

A number on a quote means little until you know what is in it. These six parts show up in almost every quote, and AI has cut the effort for only some of them.

Part What it covers Cheaper because of AI?
Strategy goal of the site, audience, page order, path to an enquiry partly: a draft is quick, the decisions are still yours
Design layout, colours, fonts, mobile version yes: drafts and variants take very little time now
Copy home page, services, about, prices, references only partly: writing is faster, but you have to supply the facts
Build implementation, forms, speed, hosting, redirects yes for a simple business site; no for shops, booking and integrations
Testing and launch desktop and phone checks, links, forms, legal pages partly: tests run automatically, the approval doesn't
Upkeep changes, updates, security, new content partly: changes are faster, but someone still has to request and check them

The biggest item is usually the copy, not the design. Why that is so is covered in Web Design for the Self-Employed: Worth It?. How to write it yourself is in How to Write Website Content, Page by Page. What comes up regularly after launch is listed in Website Maintenance: Tasks, Checklist, Cost.

How web designers charge: flat fee, hourly rate or monthly plan

Who carries which risk in each model is broken down in What Does a Website or Landing Page Cost?. Here is what to ask.

Flat fee (package). A fixed amount for a described scope, often with a page count. Work it backwards: the fee divided by the provider's hourly rate gives the hours they plan for. If that doesn't fit your scope, something is missing or the estimate is generous. Ask what an extra page costs.

Hourly rate. You pay the time actually spent. Fair when the scope is open, but only with a cap. Get the hours estimated per part.

Monthly plan. A monthly fee covering build, hosting and often upkeep. It lowers the upfront cost and moves the question to the end of the contract: term, exit cost, and whether you get source code, content and domain. Without a clear answer you rent a website you'll rebuild when you switch.

How to compare web design quotes: eight questions

This is not legal advice. Put the same questions to every provider, otherwise you compare amounts that describe different work:

  1. Who writes the copy? If the quote says "client to supply content", you do.
  2. How many revision rounds are included, and what does each extra one cost?
  3. Who provides the privacy policy and other legal pages? The responsibility stays with you, whoever adds them.
  4. Whose name is the domain registered in? It belongs in yours, not the provider's.
  5. Do you get the source code and logins? And what usage rights to the design and images does the contract grant?
  6. What does a change after sign-off cost? As an hourly rate or a fixed price, in writing.
  7. Is hosting included, and what happens to it if you switch?
  8. How long does a monthly plan run, and what does leaving cost?

How such a project runs with a provider is covered in Getting a Website Built: Steps, Options.

"The era of expensive websites is over": what's true about it

I mean something specific: building a simple business website has become cheap. A builder costs a monthly fee, an AI generator produces a first draft in minutes, and an AI employee writes source code you can host anywhere. See AI Website Generators Compared, Website Builders Compared and, for zero dollars, Build a Website for Free: The Real Ways.

Only the build has become cheap, though. What remains is work, yours or a provider's: the copy, the facts about your offer, the legal pages, the upkeep and the decision about what goes live. Pay a lot for a simple business site today and you often pay for the cheap part and get the hard part handed back as "client to supply content".

A provider still makes sense for a shop with payments and returns, for integrations such as booking or inventory, under strict professional rules, or when you simply don't have the time. Then the eight questions above help you spend the money well. How to take on the rest yourself, step by step, is in Build Your Own Website: A Guide With AI.

What an AI employee changes in the math

In my business, Ralf, my AI web designer, builds the websites. He has built more than 20 client websites and maintains kevinwelter.com technically. For pricing, two lines from his team page matter more than speed: no service, price or review is invented, and going live remains a human decision.

That shifts the bill. Strategy, design, build and testing are handled by Ralf. Positioning, new services, legal claims, sensitive customer data and the actual launch are, according to his team page, decided by you. The site won't be found on its own afterwards either; that is the job of Sebastian, my AI employee for SEO and blogging.

The price for this route is on Ralf's team page: in the Standard tier of my community for $5 a month you build Ralf yourself using the proven process; in the Premium tier for $149 a month he is included as a ready-made, tested template (as of October 29, 2026). You pay for domain and hosting on top, as with any other route; plans are compared in Web Hosting Comparison: Prices, Space, SFTP. What a build with a coding agent looks like in practice is shown in Build a Website With Claude Code: A Guide. For your specific case, we'll look at it together.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a web designer charge per hour?

There is no single number. The BLS reports a median wage of $44.54 an hour for employed web developers and $50.00 for web and digital interface designers in 2025; a freelance rate also covers unbilled time and overhead. In the German Freelancer-Kompass 2026, design freelancers report 89 euros an hour on average.

Why are web design quotes so far apart?

Because they rarely describe the same work, usually differing on copy, revision rounds, legal pages and upkeep. Go through the eight questions above.

Is a monthly website plan better than a flat fee?

It can fit if you want to spend little upfront and need upkeep. What decides it is the end of the contract: term, exit costs, and whether you can take source code, content and domain with you.

Is a website builder cheaper than a web designer?

In the monthly amount, yes; in the work, not necessarily. With a builder you do the design, copy and upkeep yourself. How the builders differ and what happens when you leave is in Website Builders Compared.

What to do next

Write your scope on one page: goal, pages, features, who supplies the copy, who makes changes later. That sheet gets you comparable quotes. If you want to hand the work to an AI employee and keep the approval, see how Ralf works. Ralf and the other ready-made AI employees are available to load in my community AI Employee Framework.
